Map Note regarding development of Arkansas:
Prior to statehood, the lands now known as Arkansas were American Indian lands, primarily those of the Quapaw, Osage and Caddo Nations. The lands were then part of the French Empire, next Spanish, and then again French. After the Louisiana Purchase from France in 1803, the lands were part of the Louisiana Territory, next Missouri Territory, then Arkansas Territory until statehood in 1836.
